The Beginning

This centre was started by Agamananda Swami, an initiated disciple of Swami Brahmananda ji Maharaj, the first president of the Ramakrishna Order and a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna. Inspired by the scholarship, personality and saintly life of Swami Agamananda, the local citizens of Kalady offered him a piece of land and an old building, and invited him to begin an Ashrama here. In 1936 Sri Ramakrishna Advaita Ashrama was thus started. It was affiliated to Belur Math in 1941.

In the year 1941, after the visit of Swami Madhavananda , the then General Secretary of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, the Ashrama was affiliated to the Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Order, and was made a branch Math Centre. Swami Agamananda worked for 25 years, took up various socio –religious activities.
